CENTRAL BANK HEADQUARTERS

Jefferson City, Missouri
Office Building, New Construction
65,000 s.f., 3 stories

The Central Bancompany wanted the design of their new corporate headquarters building to compliment the mid-century modern design of their original headquarters building located directly across the street from the proposed site.  In order to accomplish this goal, strong linear lines were emphasized in the new glass and steel building which rests on a traditional limestone plinth.  A large aluminum sunshade was added as an iconic as well as practical element.  This sunshade cantilevers out twenty feet from the building on all sides and provides shading for the glass.  The composition of the fins and infill panels were designed with three distinct cross sections, depending on the function of the space below:  open at the planters to allow sunlight and rainwater to reach the plants; partially enclosed at the secondary exterior walkways to protect pedestrians from the elements; and primarily solid and closed at the main entries in order to protect visitors and employees from the elements, as well as to highlight these particular areas.  A cantilevered glass and steel "floating" stair is a focal point of the spacious lobby.  The majority of the offices and work stations have direct access to daylighting and views.  At the roof, a light-filled cafeteria penthouse with cork floors provides a welcoming place to take a break during the work day.
