The BLOOMHOUSE conveys a sense of optimism about the future, while responding to the practical challenges that the future holds.  The structure grows organically from the earth and expands outwards as it reaches the sky.  Concrete leaves emerge from the ground and unfold around the second floor, providing outdoor living spaces for every room.  White concrete petals fold over the third floor balconies, providing shade, while smaller leaves bend outwards to encompass planters.  Brightly colored petals, inspired by the California Poppy, bloom upwards to form the structure of the roof above.

Advancements in formwork and production provide the means to execute the BLOOMHOUSE’s unique design.  Its radial geometry and cellular structure are derived from those found in nature.  Its small footprint allows natural drainage and wildlife patterns to remain largely unaltered.  The circular forms open to one another, providing an interplay between indoor and outdoor living spaces as well as panoramic views of the urban landscape beyond and the Hollywood sign above.  Each living space has access to large operable windows and doors, allowing for an abundance of natural light and cross ventilation.  Integral solar cells on the roof provide a sustainable source of energy, while built-in planters provide a sustainable source of food.  A central elevator insures that the home will remain comfortable and livable, regardless of the physical abilities of its occupants.  An open, non-hierarchical floor plan enables a variety of living arrangements, which can evolve and change, along with the needs of its owners.

The BLOOMHOUSE is rooted below the iconic Hollywood sign provides a sculptural compliment to the sign’s traditional forms.  When a tourist journeys to the site and posts their photos on social media, no caption will be needed.  In a sea of online images, the BLOOMHOUSE will become as instantly recognizable as the Hollywood sign itself.
