NORTH ISLAND CREDIT UNION HEADQUARTERS

San Diego, California
Office Building, New Construction
128,370 s.f., 6 stories + basement

The North Island Credit Union Headquarters building was designed to reflect the two primary facets of the company's corporate identity, described as serious banking with a fun side.  The stone massing elements exude the permanence traditionally associated with financial institutions, while the glass and aluminum elements represent lighter, more open, qualities.  These two elements (light vs. heavy; serious vs. fun; business vs. casual) are juxtaposed throughout the project.  The stone mass is carved out to reveal the glass façade beyond and to create deep balconies on each level which provide places to enjoy the Southern California climate.  As part of the full interior design package, dark wood elements were contrasted with lighter woods, bamboo flooring, and flora inspired interior finishes.  A large central room devoted to a Zen garden gives employees an unencumbered space for relaxation and reflection, while double-height windows provide views to the ocean beyond on a clear day.  The company also emphasized the importance of the "Island" part of their name.  That tropical theme is expressed throughout the project, from the large palapa-inspired glulam beam sculpture in the lobby, to the decorative concrete flooring in the lobby and entry plaza that is embedded with a pattern of stones and seashells designed to mimic the rolling surf, to the tropical plant palette and surrounds the building.  The majority of occupants are provided with direct access to daylighting, expansive views, and multiple exterior balconies due to the location of their custom-designed workstations at the perimeter of the building.  Private offices are located towards the center and are fitted with custom glass panels that allow for additional daylighting and views beyond.  The project also includes a health club for employee use, a large lunch room, and a public community meeting room provided with its own private entrance and landscaped patio.  The Central Bank Headquarters Building uses sustainable materials and building systems throughout and was one of the first LEED Silver Certified buildings in San Diego at the time of its completion.
